Sophomore forward Cortney Sobrero (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named www.gobulldogs.com Athlete of the Week for Sept. 21. The honor is the second for a women's soccer player this season and the first of Sobrero's career. Sobrero, who leads the WAC in goals and ranks fourth in the nation in average goals and points per game, recorded Fresno State's first hat trick in four years to help lead the Bulldogs to a 4-2 victory over New Mexico on Sept. 19. She joined former Bulldog standouts Jill Pearson and Cheryl Gano as the only players to score three goals in a single game. Pearson, who scored four times against Weber State on Sept. 17, 2000 for the most recent hat trick, and Gano accomplished the feat three times during their careers. As a result, Sobero was also named WAC Offensive Player of the Week, marking the first time a Fresno State women's soccer player was honored since Pearson won the award four years ago following her hat trick performance. Sobrero now leads the Bulldogs with seven goals in just five games. She is also tops on the club in points (16), shots (19) and shots on goal (12). Her recent offensive success has also vaulted her among the top-10 in two of Fresno State's career categories: points (25) and goals (10). Fresno State (2-3-1) enters a stretch where it plays five games over the next two weeks, the first three of which are non-conference contests. The Bulldogs begin this week by hosting Pacific (4-1-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. Later in the week, Fresno State travels to Berkeley for a match against No. 14 California on Friday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m.
