FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team is currently in first place after shooting 309 the first round of the Sacramento State Invitational at Riverside Country Club. Host Sacramento State is in second with 311 and Santa Clara is third with 313.
Bulldog freshman Laura Luethke is tied for first with Sacramento State's Sarah Kuykendall after shooting 74 (-1). Luethke was the individual tournament victor two weeks ago at Colorado State's Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, Sept. 13-14.
Sophomore Brittany Cooley, who is playing as an individual, is currently in third after shooting a first-round 75 and junior Adrianna Chico is two strokes behind with 77, ending the day in a tie for fourth place.
Junior Meggie Fagundes (78) is in eighth and junior Yumi Chung, also playing as an individual, is tied for ninth after a first-round 79. Senior Holly Cornell shot 80 to tie for 11th and freshman Whitney Wade is tied for 16th after shooting 83.
"We didn't play our best today," head coach Angie Cates said. "Everyone struggled a bit, most likely due to nerves. We had a decent crowd out there watching and we are not used to that. I think we will play much better tomorrow."
Fresno State tees off its final round Tuesday at 8 a.m.
