FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's inaugural women's golf squad claimed its first-ever victory Tuesday at the Sacramento State Invitational, hosted at the Riverside Country Club. Fresno State claimed the team title with 615 (309-306), finishing ahead of Santa Clara (313-315 - 628) and host Sacramento State (311-325 - 636).
Freshman Laura Luethke (74-71) claimed the individual tournament title, shooting two under for a 145 total. She was the only golfer to shoot a subpar round during the tournament. The win was Luethke's second collegiate victory, as she won Colorado State's Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic Sept. 14.
Junior Adrianna Chico (77-78 - 155) shot 78, dropping one spot for a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Brittany Cooley (75-82) and junior Meggie Fagundes (78-79) tied for sixth with totals of 157 and junior Yumi Chung (79-79) and senior Holly Cornell (80-78) tied for eighth with totals of 158. Cooley and Chung were competing as individuals in the tournament. Freshman Whitney Wade notched a consistent 83, finishing in a tie for 15th.
"I am very proud of this team," head coach Angie Cates said. "The girls have worked so hard to come this far and I think this win says a lot about our character and where the program is headed."
The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 11-12, in Boise, Idaho, for the Bronco Fall Invitational.
