For his outstanding play in the MPC Computers Bowl victory over 18th-ranked Virginia, Paul Pinegar has been named Toyota/gobulldogs.com Athlete of the Week for Dec. 22-29. Pinegar, a junior from Woodland, Calif., was marvelous in leading Fresno State to perhaps the biggest victory in program history. The quarterback went 23-of-36 for 235 yards and a bowl-record five touchdowns as the Bulldogs downed Virginia 37-34 in overtime. Trailing 31-24 with six minutes left, Pinegar helped guide Fresno State on a long drive that milked nearly the remaining time on the clock and culminated in a 3-yard TD pass to Jaron Fairman on a fourth-down play with 11 seconds to go. In the overtime period, after the Cavaliers led off with a field goal, Pinegar -- who was named game MVP -- connected with Stephen Spach on the Bulldogs' first play of the extra session. Spach tumbled into the end zone and was mobbed by teammates as Fresno State celebrated its third consecutive bowl victory, all over BCS competition. |
