| Fresno State seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter of the women's tennis team have been named the Toyota/gobulldogs.com athletes of the week for Oct. 10. Last week, Sainz and Winterhalter made an amazing run at the ITA All-American doubles title, the first major championship of the 2005-06 tennis season. The Bulldogs lost to the Thompson twins of Notre Dame 9- 8 (7) in an incredible match that was played well by both teams. The Bulldogs were down 6-7 late in the match, but rallied to take an 8-7 lead. Notre Dame then tied the score at eight to send the match into tiebreakers. Tiebreakers reached 7-7, before the Irish won 9-7. Sainz and Winterhalter first had to win three matches just to qualify for the main draw. They then continued their streak to win a total of six consecutive matches before losing to Notre Dame. The Bulldogs knocked off three doubles teams in the top 11, and four teams in the top 16 during their improbable run at the title. Also nominated this week: Alison Pitton (Volleyball), Taylor Siebert (women's golf), Dwayne Andrews (football) and Alison Sill (soccer).
