The following are selected quotes from head coach Pat Hill's weekly press conference. Fresno State enters this week at 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the WAC and travels to Honolulu to face Hawai'i on Saturday, Oct. 29, in a 4 p.m. PST kick-off. The game will be televised nationally on ABC.
Recapping the Idaho game:
"After watching the film, you could see how we really played well on special teams. Defensively, we played outstanding after the first series and continued to play at a high level throughout the game. We started clicking near the end offensively and managed to put up some points...It's a lot easier to correct your errors after a win compared to after a loss, so hopefully we've got a lot of those things corrected. We will need to have great focus this weekend when we go to Hawaii."
On preparing for a road game at Hawai'i:
"Focus is the most important part about going to Hawaii and playing a road game. The trip is long. There are certain things we cannot control. By the time we leave here Thursday and get to our hotel, it becomes a 14-hour day. I can't control that. We're going to bus to Los Angeles, fly from Los Angeles and the trip just becomes a little bit longer than the rest we take. On the other hand, Hawai'i has got to do it four times a year...I am glad it's a day game though. Instead of sitting around all day, we are going to get up, eat and get going. I want to get going as quick as possible."
When asked how late the coaches stay awake breaking down game film:
"Hey listen- when I worked for Bill Belichick for five years, I went from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. so sleep is not an issue. I get plenty of sleep."
On the Hawai'i offense:
"They are starting to come along. I think their quarterback is talented; he's a good runner. Their receivers have great quickness and I like the way they play in the offensive line. This is going to be a physical, fun game. I like these games."
On the Hawai'i defense:
"Jerry (Glanville) has changed it from a four-man line to a three-man line. He is obviously very sharp and he knows how to plan. The defense knows how to attack, they are getting a lot more sacks and are playing better against the run. They are playing eight and nine-man fronts. They play very hard and aggressively, especially at home. If you just watched their game against Boise State, you know they are going to turn it on and challenge you at a very high level. Jared Zabransky took a lot of hits in that game- Hawai'i tattooed him pretty good. They played a heck of a football game against Boise State and we anticipate the same thing against our club...You better be ready in pass protection because they are going to put heat on your quarterback."
Thoughts on the Hawai'i fans:
"I just think their fans are passionate about their team. I like June Jones, I like the University of Hawai'i and I like their football team. I like the way they have a "dislike" for us- not a bad dislike, it just means they want to beat us. That's the way college football should be. I don't sense that in every stadium. I sense that in Boise. I sense it in San Jose because of the past and the age-old conflict. And when you go to Hawai'i, you can sense it there. If UTEP would have stayed in the league, I think that was starting to grow. I would rather play in one of those environments any day; big games with a lot on the line."
