Finishing Home
The Bulldogs finish up their home slate this week by hosting two matches. First up for Fresno State is a chance to improve their WAC position by hosting the Boise State Broncos, who are locked for a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference with Fresno State and Louisiana Tech, as all three teams currently stand at 2-9 in conference play. In the new-look WAC, all nine teams are eligible for the tournament, with the eighth and ninth-place teams participating in a play-in game before an eight-team single elimination tournament. A win Thursday puts Fresno State in the driver's seat to get the seventh spot and the automatic entry into the tournament. The Broncos are 6-12 overall, and have beaten Louisiana Tech twice in five games this season for their conference wins. The team is led by junior Cameron Flunder, who averages 3.75 kills per game for the Broncos. As a whole, though, the team is eighth in the conference in hitting, hitting .162 over the season and are allowing opponents to hit .222. Following that match, the Bulldogs close out their home slate with a non-conference opponent in Cal State Northridge. The Matadors come into this week with a 4-18 record, and currently stand in last place in the Big West conference. That match begins at 3 p.m. in the afternoon to avoid a conflict with football, but will still be held in the North Gym. Fresno State will also be hosting Senior night on that night, honoring Fresno State's two seniors in their final home match.
Senior Spotlight
With the final home match for the 2005 Fresno State Volleyball team occuring on Saturday, the Bulldogs are recognizing two student-athletes that have been with the program for all four years since 2002. Always one of the team's most outstanding students, senior outside hitter Briana Rempel has made an extended impact on the court in this, her final season. Starting in 17 matches this year, Rempel has made 108 kills and 64 digs while playing as part of the regular rotation for the majority of the year. Making the Dean's list four-times as a Bulldog, Rempel was a three-time Fresno State Scholar Athlete, a two time WAC scholar-athlete and also a two time Academic All-WAC. Rempel made a career high 19 kills against Lousiana Tech this season, and recorded two double-doubles.
Joining her as a graduating senior is Robyn Keune, one of the most successful setters that the program has ever produced. Fourth among all setters, averaging 11.55 assists per game, Keune has played an important role for all four seasons as a Bulldog. Playing in 14 matches as a freshman, Keune made 209 assists in 28 games before taking over as the full-time setter as a sophomore. In 2003, Keune made 1,379 assists, the best of her career, averaging 12.65 assists per game, and adding 79 kills as well, including a career high nine against Boise State that year, hitting .900 on the match. (9/0/10) Continuing to cement her place among the greats at Fresno State, Keune made assist no. 3000 in her career last week against Utah State, and with at least seven matches remaining, has a good chance to pass Traci Sliester for third among all Fresno State players in career assists. Keune is also a threat as a defender, entering this week with 23 double-doubles in her career as well in digs and in assists.
