FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State benefited from an opportunistic defense and balanced scoring in a 91-46 rout of crosstown rival Fresno Pacific on Monday night at the Save Mart Center in the team's first of two exhibition contests.
Four Bulldogs scored in double-figures- led by senior Toni Atherley's 15 points- and the stingy defense forced 39 turnovers in the victory. All 12 available players saw court time and scored with the exception of senior Amy Parrish, who sat out the contest as a precaution while she continues to nurse a hamstring injury.
Statistics from tonight's exhibition do not count toward regular season totals.
Junior Andrea Roberson chipped in with 11 points while senior Faith Probst and junior Brittani Green each added 10. Junior Jasmine Plummer recorded six points, four blocks and eight of Fresno State's 27 steals.
Fresno State shot 44.9-percent (35-78) from the field compared to Fresno Pacific's 29.6-percent clip (16-54). The Sunbirds did not have a single player reach double-figures in scoring and were led by Melissa Montoya's eight points.
Fresno Pacific scored the first bucket of the game courtesy of a Montoya jumper and led 6-5 at the 16:29 mark. Fresno State responded with a 10-0 run to regain the lead and later extended its lead to double-digits at 23-12 with 5:37 remaining in the first half following a lay-up from Plummer.
Six straight points from Green gave the Bulldogs a 35-19 halftime lead.
The second half was all Fresno State, with the `Dogs outscoring the Sunbirds 56-27. A three-pointer from Atherley stretched the lead to 22 at 43-21 and the Bulldogs continued to coast the rest of the way.
A scoop from Kendra Walker-Roche gave Fresno State its largest lead of the game at 91-43 with 22 seconds remaining.
Fresno State plays its final exhibition game of the year on Tuesday, Nov. 15, against the Melbourne Roos. Tip-off time is 6 p.m.; the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team. The Bulldogs open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 19, at UC Irvine.
