AMES, Iowa (AP) - Ja'Vance Coleman scored all of his 20 points in the second half and Fresno State turned runs of 11-0 and 18-0 into an 84-77 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night.
Fresno State (3-1) rebounded from a 16-point loss at Buffalo in a big way to hand Iowa State (4-2) just its second loss in 24 nonconference home games under coach Wayne Morgan. The first was a week ago, to Iona.
Coleman scored 11 straight Fresno State points - three 3-pointers and a baseline drive - to pull the Bulldogs into the lead for the first time, 45-40 with 15:58 left.
Iowa State came back with an 11-0 run to go up 51-45, but Fresno State answered, this time with 18 straight points. Coleman started the burst with a 3-pointer and finished it with another 3, making it 63-51 - enough of a cushion for the Bulldogs to hold on.
Perimeter shooting carried the Bulldogs in their comeback. They were 7-for-8 on 3-pointers at one point in the second half and finished the half 7-for-10.
Coleman went 6-for-10 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, after missing only his two shots in the first half. He would go on to score 20 points to post his third 20-point game of the season and 15th of his career.Quinton Hosley led Fresno State with 22 points and 10 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the year and second 20-point game of the season.
Curtis Stinson had a double-double for Iowa State with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Will Blalock scored 17 for the Cyclones and Rahshon Clark 15.
Iowa State kept threatening down the stretch but never got closer than four points. Clark's dunk on a follow shot cut the lead to 81-77 with 20 seconds left, but Coleman made a free throw and Donovan Morris sank two more to finish it off the Cyclones.
Fresno State got off to a shaky start, missing six of its first seven shots and falling behind 11-2. Iowa State led 22-15 when Dwight O'Neil went on a tear. He sliced through the defense for a layup, stole the ball and dunked and hit a 3-pointer to lead a 9-2 run that tied it 24.
Though the Bulldogs never led in the opening half, it was a game from then on.
"Our defensive game plan was solid," Fresno State head coach Steve Cleveland said. "Iowa State was more guard oriented and we had to prepare for that. We knew this was going to be a game of streaks and just a difficult game overall.
"I thought Quinton (Hosley) was just a warrior tonight and Ja'Vance (Coleman) came out and did what he can do and a lot of his points came from contested shots," Cleveland added. "Renato (Cesar) and Hector (Hernandez) gave us some really solid minutes and had key defensive stops for us.
"We were able to get to loose balls and get rebounds," Cleveland stated. "Dwight (O'Neil) got the energy going to keep us in the game, Donovan (Morris) was playing hard and Kevin (Bell) kept the team calm and and moving forward.
"For us to shoot nearly 52 percent from the floor on the road is just fantastic," Cleveland added. "By us making five more 3-pointers than ISU put us in a better situation and we just kept fighting."
Fresno State returns home next week for a single game when its hosts CS Northridge on Wed., Dec. 7, 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs then travel to San Diego to play the University of San Diego on Sat., Dec. 10, 5:30 p.m., at San Diego State's SLAM Tournament.
