No. 21 Softball Opens Season with a Shutout Victory

SAN DIEGO - While the No. 21 Fresno State softball team had to wait a week to open its season, the Bulldogs came out swinging in the season opener and had a no-hit performance against Utah at the 15th Annual Campbell/Cartier Tournament.
Senior right-hander Jamie Southern tossed her fifth career no-hitter and the program's 56th overall en route to Fresno State's 5-0 victory over the Utes. Supplying the power were junior shortstop Christina Clark and sophomore catcher Nichole Willis, who each went 3-4 and smacked home runs.
Facing one batter over the minimum, Southern struck out 14 for her 43rd career 10-strikeout game as she posted her 91st career win and 61st career shutout victory.
Fresno State scored a run in the first, third and fourth inning before plating two in the sixth as it collected 11 hits.
In the first with two outs, Clark scored on a drop fly ball to left field hit by freshman designated player Amanda Nesbitt.
In the third, Willis led the inning off with a solo home run to left field. In the fourth, Clark led the inning off with a solo home run to left center.
In the sixth with two outs, Southern scored from third on a wild pitch before sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson had a RBI single to drive in Willis, who had reached on a base hit to center field.
Utah, which committed four errors, fell to 5-3 overall. Using two pitchers, starter Samantha Schroeder threw 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two to fall to 0-1 on the year.
Fresno State (1-0) meets No. 20 Oregon State immediately following this game.
