COLUMBUS, Ga. - Under the bright Columbus skies in Georgia, without a rain cloud in sight, the No. 25/19 Fresno State softball team utilized the long ball and showcased stingy pitching in the circle to collect its second win of the year.
Behind a three-hit eight strikeout performance and a two-run home run from senior All-American Jamie Southern, the Bulldogs posted a 6-0 victory over Seton Hall, which was coming off an upset win over No. 10 LSU (9-0), to open NFCA Leadoff Classic action.
Also enjoying the long ball was junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark, who also belted a two-run shot while going 3-4 from the plate with three runs.
Senior third baseman Leticia Pacheco had the other two RBI for the Bulldogs while sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson also had a multi-hit game by going 3-4.
Fresno State (2-1) scored two runs in the first, second and sixth inning as it collected nine hits.
In the first, Clark led off with a walk before Southern sent a 1-0 pitch over the left center fence for an early 2-0 lead.
In the second with one out, senior center fielder Kristy Villasenor hit a sharp shot back to the pitcher and beat out the throw to first. Clark then hit her second home run of the year after sending an 0-1 pitch to left center to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth, Clark led the inning off with a single to center field. Southern lined out to first before sophomore catcher Nichole Willis reached safely after being hit by pitch. Freshman designated player Amanda Nesbitt then walked to load the bases. Pacheco then responded with a two run single through the left side to give Fresno State a 6-0 lead and eventual win.
The Bulldogs will play Texas State tonight at 7:30 p.m. (EST) in pool play at the 10th NFCA Leadoff Classic.
