FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 22/17 Fresno State softball team recorded a 5-0 win over visiting Saint Mary's as the Bulldogs collected eight hits, including a home run by sophomore catcher Nichole Willis.
Junior right hander Laura Ferreira picked up her second win in as many days. Coming into the second inning for starter Amanda Nesbitt, Ferreira scattered four hits, walked one and struck out five in 4.1 innings of work to improve to 2-1 overall.
Fresno State put up three runs in the third before tacking on two more in the fifth.
In the third with one out, junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark drew a walk. Senior designated player Jamie Southern then doubled to right center as Clark raced around the bases to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Willis then responded with a RBI single to left center to score Southern. With two outs and runners on first and second, freshman first baseman Kristin Sylvester singled through the left side to knock in Willis.
In the fifth, Southern drew a leadoff walk before Willis hit her fourth home run of the year with a shot to dead center.
Sylvester and Willis each had two hits for the Bulldogs as Willis drove in three while Sylvester and Southern each had one RBI.
Saint Mary's used three pitchers as starter Lauren Gardner took the loss and fell to 0-3 on the year. Left fielder Marcia-Marie Euker had two of the Gaels' five hits after going 2-3 at the plate.
