FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 22/17 Fresno State softball team picked up its first mercy run-rule victory of the year when it defeated Saint Mary's, 9-1, in the night cap of the non-conference doubleheader.
The Bulldogs, who had six extra base hits in the win, banged out 11 hits that saw a season-high four doubles to go along with a pair of triples against the Gaels.
Senior right hander Amanda Wolf scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three in 5.0 innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the year.
While four Bulldogs collected at least two hits a piece, the 'Dogs were paced by sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson, who went 2-2 with a run, three RBI and a triple.
Senior designated player Jamie Southern (2-3, 2 runs, RBI), freshman first baseman Kristin Sylvester (2-2, 2 runs, RBI), freshman right fielder Mallory Perkins (2-2, RBI) and senior third baseman Leticia Pacheco (1-2, 2 runs, 2 RBI) also sparked Fresno State's offense.
Fresno State scored two runs in the second, four in the third and its final three in the fourth.
Saint Mary's scored its run in the third with a solo shot from catcher Eleni Papalias.
In the second with one out, Donaldson singled to center field before Sylvester doubled down the left line to score Donaldson. With Sylvester on third and two outs, Perkins beat out an infield hit to knock in Sylvester.
In the third with one out, Southern beat out an infield hit to the pitcher before sophomore catcher Nichole Willis singled to left center. With runners on first and second, Pacheco tripled to right center as both Southern and Willis scored. Donaldson then hit a sacrifice fly to right to knock in Pacheco. With two outs, Sylvester hit her second double of the game with a shot to right center. Freshman second baseman Jenna Cervantez followed with a double down the left field line to score Sylvester.
In the fourth with one out, junior All-America shorstop Christina Clark drew a walk. Southern responded with the team's fourth double with a shot to left center as Clark ran around the horn and scored. After Willis flied out to right field to move Southern to third, Pacheco drew a walk to put Bulldogs on the corners. Donaldson then tripled to right center to plate Southern and Pacheco.
Fresno State (13-5) wraps up its 14-game home stand on Tue., March 15, with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Rhode Island,
