No. 22/17 Softball Picks Up Sweep Over Rhode Island

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 22/17 Fresno State softball team used late inning heroics to pick up a sweep over Rhode Island in the night cap of a non-conference doubleheader.
Scoring six of its seven runs in its final two innings at bat, Fresno State recorded a 7-2 win over the Rams to improve to 15-5 overall.
Using three pitchers, reliever Laura Ferreira notched her second win in as many games to improve to 4-1 overall. Senior All-American Jamie Southern recorded her first save of the year as she struck out six of the seven batters faced.
Rhode Island (1-11) picked up a run in the first and third inning on six hits. Fresno State scored a run in the third on junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark's seventh home run of the season (45th of career to rank No. 27 all-time in NCAA Division I history).
The Bulldogs put four runs up in the fifth before tacking on two more in the sixth as they recorded 10 hits in the second game.
In the fifth, Southern led the inning off with a home run, her seventh of the year, to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman first baseman Kristin Sylvester had a RBI single to left, senior centerfielder Kristy Villasenor picked up a RBI on a hit by pitch and Clark hit a deep single to short for the third RBI of the inning.
In the sixth, Southern led off with a double before sophomore catcher Nichole Willis doubled her in. With one out, Sylvester tripled to right field to plate Willis for the Bulldogs' seventh run.
Fresno State will travel to Fullerton, Calif., for the Kia Klassic. The tournament starts Thur., March 17, for the Bulldogs as they open tourney action against North Carolina at 4:00 p.m. and No. 6 Michigan at 8:30 p.m. The 'Dogs close out pool play the next day against host CS Fullerton at 4:00 p.m. before bracket play gets underway.
