Sainz Named WAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Lucia Sainz has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 28. This is her first honor of the spring and the second for a Bulldog.Sainz, a junior from Barcelona, Spain, went 3-0 in both singles and doubles to lead 21st-ranked Fresno State to a third place finish at the UNLV Invitational. A junior, Sainz teamed with Courtney Jantz to drop only 14 games in three doubles victories. In the team's final match of the event, Sainz and Jantz, currently ranked 49th nationally, upset New Mexico's fifth-ranked Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic 8-5.
In singles, Sainz was just as impressive. After easy wins over Oklahoma State's Zana Masnic and Sharon Marin, she took out New Mexico's Michelle Heidbrink 6-4, 6-2 to cap a perfect tournament.
Sainz is currently second on the team in singles wins with 14 while with Jantz has posted a 14-4 record.
Jantz was the first Fresno State player this spring to earn WAC Player of the Week honors. She did so Jan. 24.
OTHERS NOMINATED - Louisiana Tech's Holly Ready Ready went 2-1 in singles matches and 1-2 in doubles matches on the week to move to 6-4 on the season in singles play and 7-2 on the season in No. 2 doubles teamed with Saharai Uriarte ...Rice's Tracie Chong was the only Owl to post two wins as Rice went 1-1 last week. She defeated Oklahoma's Bethany Griffin 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in Rice's narrow 4-3 loss at OU and defeated Lisette Pereira of Tulsa in straight sets 6-1, 6-4...Tulsa's Daniela Muscolino went 1-1 in singles. Muscolino's only loss came against No. 10 Story Tweedie-Yates of TCU and also defeated Blair DiSesa of Rice.
