| Make it a clean sweep for Fresno State's All-American Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) as the senior pitcher/first baseman was named the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Player of the Week today. Named USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week yesterday after sweeping Western Athletic Conference player/pitcher of the week honors on Monday, Southern is the second Bulldog to garner both national player of the week awards in the same week. Last year, junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark (Santa Ana, Calif.) swept both the USA Softball and NFCA National Player of the Week honors For April 13/14, 2004. The Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week award received today marks the fourth time that Southern has been honored by the NFCA as a national player of the week. Southern is coming off a Most Valuable Player Award performance at the 10th NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. as she helped the Bulldogs to a third place finish overall with strong performance at the plate and from the circle. Southern had 18 total bases for a 1.500 slugging percentage as she hit four home runs at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. She hit her fourth career multi home run game against No. 10 LSU. She also had three multiple RBI games and two multiple hit games, including a three-hit performance against Texas State and three RBI game against LSU. The home runs hit last weekend made Southern the fifth Bulldog to hit 20 or more career home runs as she ranks fifth all-time (22). In the circle, she posted a 2-1 mark with a shutout and 26 strikeouts in 20.0 innings for a 0.70 ERA. Scattering 13 hits and yielding four runs (two earned), she also walked two as opponents batted .176 against her. Southern tossed her 62nd career shutout victory over Seton Hall. That marks currently ranks No. 15 in NCAA Division I history. She then recorded her 44th career 10-strikeout game to post her 93rd career win against No. 10 LSU. Southern (3-1) absorbed her first loss of the year to No. 21 Florida State as two unearned runs gave the Seminoles a 2-0 victory. By recording 26 strikeouts last weekend, Southern needs 21 more to become just the 20th NCAA Division I pitcher to reach the 1,100-career strikeout plateau. She also sits seven victories shy of being the 40th NCAA Division I hurler to reach the 100-win plateau. Fresno State (4-2) makes its home debut this week with its own Bulldog Classic presented by Bingham Toyota, Thur.-Sun., March 3-6, at Bulldog Diamond. Opening its home schedule against Iowa State on Thur., March 3, 6:00 p.m., against Iowa State, the tournament begins a 14-game home stand for Fresno State.
