Winterhalter, Jantz/Sainz Appear in Latest ITA Rankings

FRESNO, Calif. - Katharina Winterhalter appeared in the singles poll for the first time in her career while Lucia Sainz and Courtney Jantz moved up to 22nd in doubles in the latest edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings, released today.Winterhalter made her debut in the singles rankings at No. 71. The junior picked up one of the biggest wins of her career on Feb. 27 in the Bulldogs' win over 30th-ranked New Mexico. Playing in her first match ever at No. 1 singles, Winterhalter upset then-No. 35 Maja Kovacek by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. That win, along with her 15-8 record, have propelled Winterhalter into the singles poll.
Jantz and Sainz have been ranked for the entire spring, but they moved from 49th to 22nd. Like Winterhalter, Jantz and Sainz improved their position on the shoulders of a big win against New Mexico. In that dual, Fresno State's combination upset fifth-ranked Kovacek and Iva Gersic 8-5. Jantz and Sainz have gone 15-4, including 5-2 in dual matches.
As a team, Fresno State (3-4) dropped to No. 40. This week, the Bulldogs host Gonzaga on Friday and No. 35 Pepperdine on Sunday. Both matches begin at noon.
The men's team (7-2), which was ranked 59th, returns to dual match action this week at the annual Blue-Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. The Bulldogs' first round opponent will be determined on Wednesday.
