FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 22/17 Fresno State softball team worked quickly in its first game of a doubleheader against Connecticut as the Bulldogs posted a 3-0 victory.
Taking just under one hour and a half to play, Fresno State scored all its runs on the long ball as senior All-America pitcher Jamie Southern and sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson connected for home runs.
In the circle, Southern pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven to improve to 6-2 on the year. While posting her fourth shutout of the season, the shutout also was No. 64 of her career -- good to rank No. 12 all-time in NCAA Division I history.
Scoring all their runs in the first, junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark drew a walk to lead off for the Bulldogs. Southern then belted a 2-2 pitch down the left field line for her sixth home run of the year. Two outs later, Donaldson hit her second long ball of the season as she homered down the left field line to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead and eventual winning score.
Fresno State (10-3) also had hits from freshman second baseman Jenna Cervantez and freshman right fielder Mallory Perkins.
UConn starting pitcher Michelle Caouette allowed three runs on four hits as she walked five and struck out one to drop to 0-4 on the year.
First baseman Ashleigh Campen was the lone Huskie to get a hit off of Southern as she went 2-3 as Connecticut fell to 1-5 on the season.
