FRESNO, Calif. - Virginia Commonwealth won four singles matches in straight sets to breeze past Fresno State 6-1 on Friday afternoon in a neutral-site match in Williamsburg, Va.
The Bulldogs (8-7) lost their second in a row and continued to struggle with their health. Lucia Sainz has been battling an illness for over a week while Jacqui Haskett and Lucia Tallo are both playing through injuries.
The maladies have caught up to Fresno State, who has now dropped 6-1 decisions in two matches in a row. Against 65th-ranked VCU, the Bulldogs won the doubles point but had little good happen to them after that.
The Rams (11-5), whose roster includes three Russians, a Belarussian and a Bulgarian, won in straight sets at Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 6 to claim their third victory in a row and first ever over Fresno State. The Bulldogs had won the two previous meetings, played in 1998 and '00.
The only two Fresno State players to extend their opponents to three sets were Lucia Tallo at No. 2 and Jacqui Haskett at No. 5. Tallo dropped a 6-1, 6-7 (6), (11-9) decision to Olga Borisova while Haskett fell to Vera Petrashevitch 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a match tomorrow against 14th-ranked William and Mary at 9 a.m. PT.
