Bulldogs Place Fifth At Varsity Equestrian Championships

SANTA FE, N.M.- Fresno State placed fifth overall at the Varsity Equestrian Championships this weekend at the Santa Fe Horse Park, in Santa Fe, N.M.
The Bulldogs took eighth out of 12 teams in the English competition and tied for second place with Oklahoma State in the Western division.
Twelve teams from 10 states including Auburn, Fresno State, Georgia, Kansas State, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Pace, South Carolina, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M and West Texas A&M, competed in the fourth national championships for varsity equestrian intercollegiate programs.
Fresno State's English team notched some impressive individual performances on the afternoon. In Equitation over fences, Amy Simmons took third to lead a contingent of Bulldog riders. Morgan McDonald and Leyla Mundy each took sixth in the same event. Mundy placed fifth in Equitation on the Flat.
In Western Horsemanship, several Bulldog riders produced notable finishes in four different sections. Brenna Burris was second, Kayla Merritt was third, Jodie Stabbe placed sixth and Elizabeth Knapp checked in fifth.
Three Bulldogs turned in solid performances in the Reining event, as Burris was third overall in the second class, Knapp was third in the third class and Sara Barnes came in second in the fourth class.
Up next for the equestrian squad is an appearance at the IHSA National Finals in Sunbury, Ohio on May 4-8.
