FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State (316/+28) stands in fifth place after the first round of the WAC Championships, hosted by Boise State at the par-72 Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, Idaho. San Jose State (301/+13) and Tulsa are tied for first place after the opening day of competition, and SMU (303/+15) and Boise State (313/+25) round out the top five.
Freshman Laura Luethke (74) shot a team-best for the Bulldogs, finishing 2-over-par in a tie for third place. Junior Meggie Fagundes (78 at +6) is tied for 13th and junior Yumi Chung notched an 80 (+8) good for a tie for 20th.
Juniors Adrianna Chico and Tiffany Veerkamp both carded 84/+12 and are tied for 29th.
Tulsa's Michaela Cavener is in the lead after shooting a 1-under-par 71, and San Jose State's Jenelle Gomez is in second with 73.
"Laura played well for us today. Her confidence is back and she feels good about her game," coach Angie Cates said. "As a team, we got off to a bad start this morning and could not make up that ground."
Competition continues at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. Tee times are as follows: Veerkamp (8:30 a.m.), Chico (8:38 a.m.), Chung (8:46 a.m.), Fagundes (8:54 a.m.) and Luethke (9:02 a.m.)
