HONOLULU - The No. 21/18 Fresno State softball team wrapped up its three-game Western Athletic Conference series with a 1-0 victory over Hawai'i.
Freshman first baseman Shauna Johnson collected the game winning hit with a RBI single in the fourth.
Senior All-America pitcher Jamie Southern recorded the win and improved to 13-2 overall after scattering six hits and striking out seven. The shutout victory was her eighth of the year.
In the NCAA record book, Southern pitched her 68th career shutout to rank No. T10 all-time. She pushed her career strikeout total to 1,176 to rank No. 14 all-time. With 103 career wins, Southern moved to No.T30 all-time.
Sophomore catcher Nichole Willis and Johnson each had multi hit games. Willis went 2-4 with a double while Johnson went 2-3 with a RBI.
In the fourth, senior third baseman Leticia Pacheco was hit by pitch to lead off the inning. After being sacrificed to second by sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson, freshman designated player Kristin Sylvester followed with a hit to left field. With runners on the corners, Johnson laced a RBI single to left field.
Hawai'i pitcher Melissa Coogan took the loss and fell to 10-9 overall after allowing one run on nine hits while walking one and striking out one.
With the loss, Hawai'i fell to 20-20 overall and 1-4 in the WAC.
Fresno State (24-8, 3-0 WAC) will travel to Pacific next Thur., April 7, 1:00 p.m.
