To earn All-America Scholar status, student-athletes must play in at least 70 percent of their team's competitive rounds, maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA and a golf scoring average under 76.
"The All-American Scholar Award is the hardest award to win because you must be excellent in both golf and academics," head coach Mike Watney said. "I have nothing but respect for these guys because Mark and Ryan put in the extra effort to excel in both areas."
Carter, a senior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., had a stellar season in which he participated in all 15 tournaments en route to a 72.81 scoring average. His best finish came at the Ping BYU Cougar Classic in April, where he placed second overall with rounds of 68-68-67 for a 13-under 203 total. He had seven top-25 finishes this year with a low round of 67.
Carter was also selected to this year's first-team all-WAC and all-Southwest Region team. In addition to being a four-time WAC Scholar-Athlete and four-time Fresno State Scholar-Athlete selection, he was a Dean's List member in 2003.
"We are going to miss Ryan Carter. He has been a model student and athlete for his entire career and team captain this past year," Watney said. "It's a great accomplishment that for his senior year he won first-team all-conference and also all-region awards. That good golf combined with his great academics resulted in his biggest award, the All-American Scholar Award. He has given us a lot of great golf moments and I think he would say he had a blast as a Bulldog."
Modglin, a junior from Simi Valley, Calif., traveled to 13 tournaments this year and recorded a 74.74 stroke average. His first place finish at the Ping BYU Cougar Classic came after he shot two of the lowest rounds of his career (66-64-72) for an impressive 14-under 202 total. Modglin finished in the top-35 six times this season.
Modglin has been named a WAC Scholar-Athlete four times, Fresno State Scholar-Athlete four times and Dean's List member numerous times.
"Mark Modglin is a phenomenal student, near a 4.0. The guys respect him a lot and voted him team captain, too," Watney said. "But, I will never forget his win at BYU, including his back-nine 28 that cemented our NCAA invitation."
Previous GCAA All-American Scholars from Fresno State include PGA players David Sutherland and Per Nyman, and former Bulldogs Josh Watney and Dustin Smith. Carter was a recipient as well in 2003.
Both Carter and Modglin served as co-captains of their team for the 2004-05 season.
