FRESNO, Calif. - Three Bulldogs shot sub-par rounds Wednesday to lead Fresno State (314-300-288) to a third place finish at the WAC Men's Golf Championship in Choudrant, La. The team shot an even third round 288 at the par-72 Squire Creek Golf Course for a 902 total (+38). The Bulldogs finished 13 strokes behind champion SMU (309-293-287 - 889).
Fresno State placed two of its own in the top-10, with junior Mark Modglin tied for sixth after shooting rounds of 78-73-71 for a 222 total (+6). Junior Jon Rosa (80-72-71) tied for ninth after posting 223 (+7).
Junior Ryan McDonald (76-75-77) finished 12-over and tied for 21st, and junior Brian Kelley (80-80-71) (+15) massively improved to shoot 71 in the final round to end in 25th. Senior Ryan Carter tied for 36th with rounds of 81-80-75 - 236.
"We played a lot better today," coach Mike Watney said. "The three 71s were very solid. I am proud of the way the guys played today."
Will Dodson of SMU claimed the individual title with a 2-under-par 214 total.
Carter, Dodson, Colt Knost (SMU), James Allenby (UTEP) and David Kim (San Jose State) were first-team all-WAC selections. Dodson was selected Player of the Year and his coach, Jay Loar, was named Coach of the Year.
The NCAA Men's Golf Western Regional is scheduled for May 19-21. Fresno State will await word on any possible postseason competition.
