FRESNO, Calif. - Clifton Smith made a name for himself Saturday, when the speedy running back and return man showed his elusiveness and quickness to the nation. For his efforts we has selected the WAC Special Teams Player of the Week and was featured on ESPN's Top 10 plays of the day.
Smith, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif. (Edison HS), returned two of his three punts for touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 55-17 win over Weber State. He scored on returns of 92 and 84 yards and totaled a school-record 189 punt return yards. His average of 63.0 yards per return set a new NCAA record in a game for an individual with 3-4 returns.
He has now returned three punts for touchdowns in his career, one shy of the Bulldog all-time record. He has scored on half of his career punt returns and averages 54.3 yards per return for his career. He set Fresno State records for most return yardage in a game and most punt returns for touchdowns in a game.
The Bulldogs continue to prepare for Saturday's game at Oregon. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 23 in this week's AP poll, while Oregon (2-0) is close to being ranked in the top 25. This game is one of the featured games of the week. It's the only game on TBS and is being called one of the 10 best games of the week by media outlets.
The Bulldogs return home Sept. 27 to play undefeated Toledo at 6 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (559) 278-DOGS or online at www.gobulldogs.com.
