Sophomore Clifton Smith has been named the Toyota/gobulldogs.com Athlete of the Week for Sept. 12. The honor is the first of Smith's career and he is the first Bulldog student-athlete selected in the 2005-06 campaign. Smith, the Bulldogs' third-string tailback, returned two of his three punts for touchdowns during Fresno State's 55-17 win over Weber State in the season opener. He scored on returns of 92 and 84 yards, eliciting a series of cheers from a raucous Bulldog crowd. As a result of his efforts, Smith was named WAC Special Teams Player of the Week. He became the first Fresno State player to return two punts for scores in the same game, and his 189 yards on returns also were a school record. In addition, his average of 63.0 yards per return set a new NCAA record in a game for an individual with three-four returns. Received consideration: Andrea Buckner (cross country).
