San Francisco - Fresno State lost their final game of their opening tournament, losing in three games to the San Francisco Dons, 24-30, 24-30, 29-31. Fresno State was led by freshman middle blocker Kasie Spencer, who had 7 blocks and 8 kills, but the Dons' balanced attack and 43 kills led to the Bulldog defeat.
Fresno State trailed through both of the first two games, and their hitting was limited by the Dons defense and libero Brynn Maurer, who made 25 digs for San Francisco over three games. Over the match, the Bulldogs hit just .090, which overshadowed their own defense which held the Dons to just .146 hitting as a team.
The 2-2 Bulldogs continue tournament play next weekend, coming back to the Bay area to participate in the Santa Clara Invitational, where they will face Santa Clara, Arizona and UC Santa Barbara over the course of three days. The first of these matches will be held on Thursday, September 8 when the Bulldogs face Santa Clara at 7 p.m. on the Broncos home court.
Game 1 Recap - San Francisco opened the first game strongly by taking a 4-1 lead. Fresno State rebounded and tied the game at 4, but the Dons scored three straight to move the score to 7-4. The teams continued to trade service through the middle of the match, continuing from 11-8 to 15-12 with neither team being able to change the Dons' three point lead. Finally, the Dons followed two kills from Linzy Kearny to take a 19-13 lead. The Bulldogs brought the Dons within 5 at 20-15, but the Dons rattled off an 8-4 run at that point en route to a 30-24 win.
Game 2 Recap - Fresno State took the first point of the second game, but the teams traded points until the Bulldogs took the first two-point lead of the match at 10-8. The Dons then followed suit, taking a two point lead at 13-11 following an ace from Susan Bednarova. The Dons extended their lead to 17-12 after a kill from Theresa Hart, leading to a Fresno State timeout. San Francisco continued to put the pressure on the Bulldogs though, and cruised through the rest of the game, winning 30-24.
Game 3 Recap - The Dons scored the first two points of the match, and two kills by KeLicia Shorts gave the Dons a 5-2 lead out of the gate. Fresno State pulled to within one of the Dons at 7-6, and continued to tie the game at seven. The two teams traded serve until the Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at 12-11 after a solo block by setter Robyn Keune. The Dons came back and retook the lead at 15-14, and extended their lead to 18-15 before the Bulldogs could break serve. The Bulldogs again brought San Francisco within one, but Dons made a short rally to bring their lead to 21-17. Fresno State continued to battle for the game, and tied the game at 29 after facing two match points. The Don's answered back, however, and took the last game 31-29.
