Off To Santa Clara The Bulldogs continue tournament play this weekend, traveling to the Santa Clara campus for three days to participate in the Santa Clara Invitational. Three ranked western schools are participating in the tournament, as No. 15 Arizona and No. 18 UC Santa Barbara are two teams that Fresno State will face in the tournament. The invitational follows a different schedule than last week's tournament, as the team will play one match in three consecutive days, beginning with No. 25 Santa Clara at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The Bulldogs hold the advantage over the Broncos in the all-time series, leading 23-5, but Santa Clara won the last meeting between the teams in 2000 in four games.
San Francisco Treats Bulldogs Evenly The Bulldogs kicked off the regular season last weekend with four matches in two days at the USF Powerade/Asics Classic. The Bulldogs struggled in the opener against William and Mary, dropping a three-game decision to the Tribe, but won two straight matches against Long Island and North Carolina. The win over the Tar Heels was representative of what the Bulldogs intend to do this season, as the Bulldogs had 88 digs as a team, led by libero Cheryl Selenak while hitting .215 as a team, led by freshman middle blocker Kasie Spencer's 21 kills. The 3-1 win was the first of the season for the Bulldogs, who left the tournament with a 2-2 record after a loss to San Francisco on Saturday. Team leaders from the tournament included Selenak, who had 69 digs during the tournament and played in every game as the libero. Spencer also saw extended time during the tournament and benefitted from it, recording 44 kills and 18 total blocks. Setter Robyn Keune moved into fourth place among Fresno State setters in assists, and started the year with 101.
Oregon Arrives For Two Matches The Bulldogs begin their home slate next week on Friday, September 16, when the Oregon Ducks arrive in town for two matches. The team starts with the opener at 7 p.m. at the North Gym on the 16th, before moving across campus for the annual match at the Save Mart center. When Fresno State hosts Oregon on Sat., Sept. 17, at the Save Mart Center, the Bulldog football team will be playing the Ducks in Eugene, Ore. The Fresno State Athletics Department will open the doors early that day at the Save Mart Center so that fans will not miss a single action from either team. With a paid admission to the Fresno State-Oregon volleyball match that night, fans will have the opportunity to watch the 4:00 p.m. football game on the jumbotron in the Save Mart Center before the Bulldogs' 8:00 p.m. match against the Ducks. Oregon volleyball also features a new head coach, Jim Moore, who takes over a program that has struggled of late, including a last place finish in the Pac-10 last season. The Bulldogs have won two straight matches against the Ducks, and have won 9 of 15 matches overall.
