Senior guard Mirenda Swearengin (Houston, Texas) has been named the Toyota/www.gobulldogs.com Athlete of the Week for Jan. 24. She is the third women's basketball player to win the honor this year, joining guards Chantella Perera and Paige Diggs. In two convincing victories last weekend that helped Fresno State maintain its first-place standing in the WAC, Swearengin was simply impressive. She averaged 8.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists and 4.5 steals per contest. In a 76-57 win at Idaho, Swearengin scored five points while grabbing six boards and dishing out five assists in 32 minutes of action. Two days later in a 77-52 rout of Hawai'i, Swearengin threatened quadruple-double status and finished with a line of 12 points, career-high 12 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals. At halftime, she had already recorded eight points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. For the season, she is second on the team with 13.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg and leads the club with 4.9 apg. Also nominated: Jakub Cech (men's tennis), Kent Sakamoto (baseball) and Quinton Hosley (men's basketball).
