Fresno State freshman Melanie Gloria has been named the Toyota/GoBulldogs.com Athlete of the Week. Gloria, a native of Montreal, Canada, is making an immediate impact in the Bulldog lineup this 2006 dual match season. Gloria made her debut as a Bulldog in impressive fashion. The 5-foot-7 Canadian stunned fourth-ranked Alice Barnes of top-ranked Stanford, 6-4, 1-6, (10-5) at No. 1 singles. The Bulldogs fell to the Cardinal 5-2 in the season opener Jan. 27, but it was the first time since 1999 the 'Dogs had been able to muster at least two points in a dual match against Stanford. Then on Jan. 28, Fresno State hosted #69 Santa Barbara, in its home opener. The 'Dogs won all nine matches for a 7-0 shutout of the Gauchos. Gloria easily beat UCSB's Chelsea Glynn 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Gloria and fellow Canadian freshman Vanessa Heroux handled Vyhnis/Glynn 8-3. As a result, Gloria was named the XBox Live WAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Also nominated: Kent Sakamoto (Baseball), Sergiu Modoc (Men's Tennis), Amy Parrish (Women's Basketball), Ja'Vance Coleman (Men's Basketball).
