Bulldogs in Seventh After Two Rounds at Barona Collegiate Cup

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's golf is in seventh out of 18 teams at the Barona Collegiate Cup two rounds. The Bulldogs had a strong first round with a score of 280 and a second round score of 291 to finish with 571. Wichita State (555) is currently the leader with UAB (561) in second. University of San Diego (563) is in third while Colorado State and the host team San Diego State are tied for fourth with a score of 565. Nevada is within one stroke of the Bulldogs in sixth place.
"The first round was very good, we were 8-under only three strokes from the lead," said head coach Mike Watney. "Our second round was not so good, but there is still a lot of golf to play. There are a lot of region teams within a couple of strokes of us, so tomorrow is an important day."
The Bulldogs played very close to each other today in Lakeside, Calif. Grant Doverspike, (69-70) Matt Shaw (70-73) and Brad Wyatt (71-72) have all tied for 21st with a score of 143/-1. Matt Ryan stayed even shooting two rounds of 72 to tie for 29th. Gunnar Avinelis tied for 36th after shooting rounds of 70-75 - 145. Mark Pryor played as an individual to tie for 93rd with a score of 155.
"Nobody played bad," Watney said. "It is unusual to have all five of your guys to shoot between 143-145."
Fresno State will compete in the third and final round Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at the Barona Creek Golf Club.
