FRESNO, Calif. - With just one senior on the squad, head coach Joe Gonzalez expected the 2006 NCAA Western Regional Championships to be a good learning experience for his young squad. That was certainly the case as three underclassmen paced the Dogs on the was to team finish of 23rd. The race, won by Stanford, was held at Blue Lake Park in Fairview, Ore.
Freshman Marissa McPhail placed 95th at the meet as the first Dog to cross the finish line in the 6K course. Fellow freshmen Jenny Hernandez and sophomore Roxanne Sellick each placed among the top 130 runners in the race.
"Having two freshmen and a sophomore as our top three runners really bodes well for the future of the program" said Gonzalez. "The times were slow because it was a muddy and rainy course. While be finished in the middle of he pack, we still have some quality runners coming back and a good nucleus to build on."
The Fresno State men's and women's cross country teams will hold their annual year-end awards banquet on Thursday at the University Residence Dining Facility.
