FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State forward Dominic McGuire has been named the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week for November 6-12.
McGuire, a junior from San Diego, Calif. (California), was named the Most Valuable Player of the Basketball Travelers at Fresno State Invitational over the weekend. McGuire averaged 11.7 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.7 blocks and 3.7 assists in helping the Bulldogs to a 3-0 record in the tournament. He was 12-of-23 (.522) from the field and 10-of-12 (.833) from the free throw line.
"Dominic played a great tournament on both ends of the floor," said head coach Steve Cleveland. "He did it by playing three positions, the 3, 4 and 5. We had a lot of guys play well this weekend and any of them could have been the tournament MVP."
Fresno State won its three games by an average of 21 points per game including a win over 2006 NCAA tournament participant South Alabama. It is McGuire's first career WAC Player of the Week award.
The other nominations were senior forward Nick Fazekas, Nevada; and junior guard Jaycee Carroll, Utah State.
Fresno State returns to action Friday night at San Francisco. The Dogs return home Nov. 21 to play Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
