FRESNO, Calif. - Tiffany Veerkamp is in her senior year at Fresno State and looks forward to playing her last year of golf with the `Dogs. With some unfortunate injuries the past few years, Veerkamp is looking forward to having her final year, one to remember.
Veerkamp began playing golf at the age of 5. It began as a bonding experience that she shared with her dad and eventually she began playing more seriously. Veerkamp attended UNC Greensboro before transferring to Fresno State. She red shirted her junior year and is ready to play.
Learn more about Veerkamp in her short Q&A session.
Do you have any special rituals?
My special ritual before a golf tournament is to make sure my guardian angel ball marker is in my pocket. My dad had one made for my mom, sister and I. It is something I always have on me while I am playing. It reminds me that they are all with me even if they can't be there to watch.
What sport besides golf would you play?
I would play tennis. I am completely horrible at it, but the outfits are cute and you still get to be outside and get a good tan.
What is the best part of being a college athlete?
The best part of being a college athlete is the feeling of knowing I am on a team that is like a family. Our golf team is a great group of girls and I know anyone of them is always there for me. We get along great and can always have a good time. I will miss them all when I graduate in May!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to go shopping, spend time with my family and friends or just hang out. I love to stay busy though; so hanging out doesn't happen that often.
What is your most embarrassing sports moment?
My most embarrassing sports moment has to be falling down on the golf course in a hole and finding out I had a pretty bad ankle sprain because of it. Angie still makes fun of me that I cannot even walk without getting hurt.
Who is your favorite sports hero?
I like Tiger Woods because he has outworked everyone else. His determination, perseverance, and hard work have made him the great player he is today. His ability to dominate is amazing.
What do you see in your future?
After I graduate in May I hope to get a job in Marketing or Sales or golf or sports equipment or apparel.
What is your favorite athletic moment?
My favorite athletic moment is a tie because it was really awesome the day I had a hole-in-one and the day I shot 66. Both were really fun because I never thought it would happen or that it would be that easy.
What is your favorite food?
Red Vines. I love them and will stop anywhere just to have them.
What is your most missed memory?
Playing golf with my dad. We used to get to spend quality time together and now it is a miracle if I get to play with him once a year. I really miss our talks on the course when it was just he and I.
What is your favorite television show?
Friends, even though it went off the air, I still love it and wish it were still on.
Veerkamp and the `Dogs will be back in action for their host tournament the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational held at the Copper River Country Club on Feb. 26-27.
