On the road again...
Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006- 3 a.m.: Wake up Lady Bulldogs, it's time to go to Hawaii!!! Yes that's right, we had a VERY early start to our long but exciting road trip to Hawaii and San Jose, considering we played a home game against Idaho the night before. Since our plane did not take off until 5:45 a.m., we became a sea of blue wind-suited bodies sleeping across the Fresno airport. We soon headed off to San Francisco and then the long five-hour flight to Honolulu.
We didn't mind the flight though, because at the end was a beautiful island where we had plenty of free time to relax and soak in as much of the Hawaiian culture and sun as we could. We landed around midday on Tuesday and were lucky enough to have the rest of the day off. Some of us went shopping and others hit the beach and tackled the waves on boogie boards. Our trip also happened to coincide with the NFL Pro Bowl. This meant we were seeing lots of famous people walking the streets of Hawaii. Coach Meraz and A-Lo bumped into Marcus Allen at the ice cream shop and took a few happy snaps! The rest of us only caught glimpses of a few other footballers. That night we had dinner at The Cheesecake Factory and then wandered the streets a little more before getting a good night's sleep.
On Wednesday we had breakfast at Duke's, which was right on the beach. It was a lovely start to the day. We then headed off to a hard but relatively shorter practice. We finished practice with a game of "Wall Ball". Coach Wiggins showed off his baseball skills, pelting most of us in the back with his deadly throws, but he eventually fell victim to his fellow Okie - T-Baby!!! That night we had a nice seafood buffet dinner by the aquarium, where we were entertained by the fish, sharks, stingray and a scuba diver!
Thursday was game day and we woke up ready to take on the Rainbow Wahine. After a film session, we had breakfast on our own and got ready for shoot around. We had our pre-game meal at Duke's again and then went back to the hotel to finish preparing for the game. After a focused preparation we put our plan into action and came out with a strong 69-62 victory. With our first victory of the trip under our belt, we had a little bit more free time to enjoy our last moments in Hawaii. We watched the street entertainers (robots, dancers, and artists) and grabbed some dinner to go, before heading back to the hotel for some rest before another early start.
At 5:30 a.m., we sadly left heavenly Hawaii. However, we quickly forgot its beauty as our weariness kicked in and most of slept during the five-hour flight back to San Francisco. We got on the bus and drove back to San Jose and prepared for the second game of our trip. Our focus was spot on and we finished off the trip with a convincing 63-41 win against San Jose State.
Finally, at 12:45 a.m. we arrived back in good old Fresno. Home sweet home, but it will be short lived as we head off to Nevada on Wednesday.
We want to thank all the Bulldog fans who made the trip out to San Jose to support us. We really appreciated it.
We can't wait to see some of you in Reno when we take on the Wolf Pack this Thursday.
Go `Dogs.
