Freshman Robin Mackin (Newmarket, Ontario) has been named the Toyota/gobulldogs.com student-athlete of the week for Feb. 21. The honor is the first a softball player this year. Mackin was also honored as the Xbox Live WAC Pitcher of the Week. Mackin went 2-2 in three starts last week with three complete games in 25.1 innings for a 0.83 ERA against Pacific and No. 2 UCLA. Averaging 8.1 strikeouts per 7/IP, she struck out 29 and walked six while allowing three runs (two earned) on 16 hits in four appearances. In her second full week of collegiate softball, Mackin recorded her first collegiate shutout over Pacific in the Bulldog's 2-0 home win. In that game she tossed a three-hitter and struck out 11 for her third consecutive 10-strikeout performance on the season. In the night cap versus the Tigers, she notched a win in relief as well as recording the game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning. At No. 2 UCLA, Mackin started both games against the Bruins and allowed three runs, walked six and struck out 14 in 15.2 innings. In the second game, Mackin pitched scoreless ball for 9.2 innings before allowing the winning run to score on hit by pitch. On the year, Mackin has lowered her ERA to 1.78 as she owns a 4-3 record with 59 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. Also nominated: Jakub Cech (men's tennis), Katharina Winterhalter (women's tennis), Tierre Wilson (women's basketball), Eddie Romero (baseball) and Quinton Hosley (men's basketball).
