FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team rolled past New Mexico 5-2 Sunday at the Wathen Tennis Center. Despite being down 1-0 after losing the doubles point, five women won in straight sets to give the Bulldogs a convincing victory. Fresno State improved its record to 8-5 on the year, while New Mexico dropped to 8-2.
"We really came out strong in singles after losing the doubles point," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We were a bit flat in doubles, but we showed what we can do in singles. We need to continue to improve and play like we did today for the rest of the season."
Freshman Melanie Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett were the only winners at doubles for Fresno State, defeating Quintal/Ryba 8-4 at the No. 3 spot. New Mexico's Gersic and Kovacek, ranked second in the NCAA, beat sixth-ranked seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter 8-5.
But the Bulldogs responded in singles, starting with Sainz. She beat Nora Quintal in straight sets, while freshman Bruna Paes blew past Jennifer Ryba, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Melanie Gloria, ranked 18th in the NCAA, topped No. 27 Maja Kovacek in straight sets as well. Then Winterhalter clinched the Fresno State victory with her solid win over Iva Gersic, 6-3, 6-2. Haskett also won in straight sets, after being down 5-1 in the first.
The Bulldogs will be back in action when they host Pacific on Saturday, March 25, at noon in the Wathen Tennis Center.
