FRESNO, Calif. - Jennifer Shipley shot a 1-under 71 on Monday at the UNLV Spring Invitational to help Fresno State (294) to third place through one round of play. All five Bulldogs stand in the top 30 in the field of 95 players.
Shipley, who is tied for seventh place, overcame being 3-over after the first two holes by firing two birdies and one eagle later in the round.
"Jennifer just played great today," head coach Angie Cates said. "She got off to a little bit of a rough start, but to finish her round strong like she did is wonderful."
Laura Luethke (T12th) notched a 1-over 73 in her round, also improving from being +4 by recording three birdies on the back nine.
Brittany Cooley is tied for 16th with 74 (+2), and Adrianna Chico and Taylor Siebert are both tied for 28th after shooting 76s.
Long Beach State (289) is in first place in the 18-team field, followed by UNLV (290).
"Today was a good day, really, for all the girls," Cates said. "We have been working a lot on the mental side of the game and I think it has showed."
Second-round play at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev., begins Tuesday with 7:30 a.m. tee times.
