FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team narrowly fell to 19th-ranked Harvard, Monday in Los Angeles. The Bulldogs lost the doubles point to begin the match, but bounced back to win three singles matches and nearly two more. But the Crimson of Harvard held off Fresno State for the 4-3 win. Fresno State fell to 8-6 on the season, while Harvard improved to 9-5.
"It's disappointing to lose such a close match," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We had so many opportunities to get the win."
Freshman Melanie Gloria was dominant at No. 1 singles, defeating Eva Wang in straight sets. Senior Katharina Winterhalter beat another ranked opponent, this time 59th-ranked Elisa O'Riain, also in straight sets. Senior Lucia Sainz won at No. 3 singles, as well.
Fresno State returns to action on Friday, when it hosts Long Beach State at the Wathen Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m. Also, stay tuned to gobulldogs.com for information on a possible match with Pacific that was rained out last Saturday.
