LOGAN, Utah - The No. 24 Fresno State softball team used late inning heroics to pull out a 3-2 Western Athletic Conference victory over Utah State.
Three of the five runs scored today came via home runs but the memorable shot came from freshman third baseman Haley Perkins. Delivering the game-winning hit for the Bulldogs, she led the seventh off with a solo shot to right for her second home run of the season.
Utah State got on the scoreboard right away when first baseman Jamie Fife, the second batter in the Aggies line up, hit a solo home run to left in the first inning.
Held hitless for 4.1 innings, Fresno State broke out of its slump when junior right fielder Shannon Garvin notched the first hit of the game for the Bulldogs with a double to right center. After senior All-America shortstop Christina Clark was intentionally walked for the seventh time of the season (14th of career), Perkins flied out before freshman designated player Merryann Barr drew a walk. With two outs, sophomore first baseman Kristin Sylvester roped a double to left center to plate Garvin and Clark.
In the sixth, USU hit its second home run of the game when catcher Sara Fleming hit a two-out solo home run to left.
In the top of the seventh, Perkins drilled a 1-1 pitch shot over the right field fence.
Freshman Robin Mackin picked up her 18th win of the season as she pitched a two-hitter with four walks and 11 strikeouts. The 11 strikeout performance was her 13th 10-strikeout game of the season.
Utah State starter Leslie Higley took the loss and dropped to 0-6 on the season. She allowed three runs on four hits, walked six and struck out two. Lindsey Benson pitched the final two outs of the game and threw hitless ball.
