FRESNO, Calif. - The 24th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team swept the visiting Santa Clara Broncos 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center. The team also honored seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter for their tremendous four-year careers at Fresno State. The Bulldogs have won seven consecutive matches as they head into the postseason. Fresno State improved to 15-6, while Santa Clara fell to 6-10.
"It was our last home match of the year, and the ladies really played hard to make in special for Kat and Lucky," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "It was great to see a good crowd out today, especially in support of our seniors. Our next goal is win our fifth straight WAC Championship."
The Bulldogs dominated the entire match, both in doubles and singles. Sainz and Winterhalter, ranked sixth in the country, improved to 32-8 overall and 16-5 in dual matches after defeating Barnes and Galainena 8-1. With the win, Sainz notched her 99th career doubles victory and Winterhalter got her 97th. Freshman Melanie Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett won 8-1 at the No. 3 spot, remaining undefeated at home and improving to 15-1 overall. Freshmen Tinesta Rowe and Magdalena Tokarska earned their 12th win as a doubles duo, defeating Davoudi and Leathers 8-3.
In singles, the Bulldogs did not let up, winning in straight sets on all six courts. Winterhalter lacks only two more singles victories to rank second all-time on Fresno State's career singles wins list. Tokarska won her seventh straight match, while Sainz and freshman Bruna Paes have both won four in a row. Gloria improved to 15-4 with her win at the No. 1 spot in the lineup and Haskett recorded her ninth victory of the year in dual matches.
Fresno State heads to Boise State next week for the Western Athletic Conference championships. The Bulldogs are the four-time defending champions and will look to make it five in a row when the tournament gets started on April 20.
