FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's golf coach Angie Cates has announced the signings of Pia Escandon and Hali Coppin to national letters of intent to begin playing for the Bulldogs in the fall of 2006.
Escandon (Cuernavaca, Mexico), a member of the Mexican National Team, is a two-time champion of the Regional Mexican Junior Tour and placed second in the 2005 Mexican Amateur Women's Tournament. She recently won the Anual de Las Misones tournament in Mexico with rounds of 71-75-74 and earned a sponsor's exemption to compete on the Futures Tour, the LPGA's developmental tour, during the last week of April.
The runner up at the 2005 Mexican Junior National Tournament, Escandon served as the captain of the winning North American team at World Cup 2005. The last three years, she participated in the Ryder Cup Mexico and helped Mexico win the tournament all three times. Escandon attended the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head Island, S.C., for two years. She is currently a senior at Heritage Academy in Hilton Head Island.
"Pia has a lot of tournament experience and she knows what it takes to win," said Cates. "Her transition from high school to collegiate competition should be very smooth. She's going to be a tremendous asset to our team. She's a great student, a very talented golfer and a very well-rounded person. She will fit right in with what we are trying to accomplish."
Coppin (Loomis, Calif.) won the Woodcreek Junior Tournament and Alta Sierra Junior Classic in 2005. She is a senior at Del Oro High School. A first-team all-league honoree, she was the runner up at the Stockton City Championship, AG Spanos Junior Classic, Granite Bay Junior Tournament, Hercules Junior Golf Championship and the 2005 Fairfield City Junior.
"Hali had an impressive high school season this year with many low rounds," said Cates. "She has a very solid, balanced golf swing and her game is only going to improve and reach new levels as she enters college. She is an all-around athlete - she is very competitive and ready to take it to the next level."
