FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State shot 309 in the opening round of the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship on Monday at Coyote Creek Golf Course in San Jose, Calif., to stand in fourth place.
Senior Adrianna Chico, who is tied for eighth, led the Bulldogs with 76. Freshman Jennifer Shipley and sophomore Laura Luethke both carded 77s and are tied for 10th. Taylor Siebert shot 79 and is tied for 19th, and Brittany Cooley (T34th) registered 87.
"Jennifer played especially great on the front nine today," said head coach Angie Cates. "She was 2-under through nine holes, but her back started to bother her at the end. She hung in there, though, and still managed to put up a great score.
"We're looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully improving our scores," Cates added.
Host San Jose State leads the field with 297, while New Mexico State is in second with 305. Fresno State trails third-place Nevada (308) by one stroke.
Play continues Tuesday with 8 a.m. tee times for the second round. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
