
No. 21 Bulldogs Roar Past Lions, 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. - Katharina Winterhalter won her 100th career singles match and the No. 21 Fresno State women's tennis team won its sixth consecutive in a 6-1 win over the visiting Loyola Marymount Lions, Sunday at the Wathen Tennis Center. Senior Lucia Sainz clinched the Bulldogs' victory defeating Patrycia Hubl 6-2, 6-2. Fresno State improved to 14-6 on the season, while LMU fell to 8-13.
Winterhalter, who moved past Shanna Peete on the school record list for career singles wins, won her ninth straight match. The senior from Germany led 5-3 in the second set, but Sladjana Kos rallied to win the frame 7-5. In the super-tiebreaker Winterhalter trailed 8-4, but she finished the match with six straight points to reach the century plateau for singles wins.
Sainz won her third straight match, while freshman Magdalena Tokarska won her sixth in a row, defeating Erin Ivey 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Bruna Paes has wont three straight after defeating Shawnell Russell in straight sets.
Sainz and Winterhalter lost in doubles, but freshman Tinesta Rowe and Tokarska dominated at the No. 2 spot, defeating Hubl and Ivey 8-2. To clinch the doubles point, freshman Melanie Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett won in exciting fashion, defeating Kos and Sundac 8-6.
The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine matches with two regular season contests remaining. Fresno State hosts Santa Clara and Saint Mary's in its final home matches of the season on Saturday, April 15, at 9 a.m.
