FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State shot a 2-under 286 on day two of the NCAA Western Regional in Tucson, Ariz., but fell to seventh place in the 27-team field with a two-round total of 566 (-10).
"We shot a couple of strokes under today, which is pretty good," said head coach Mike Watney. "We were at a bit of a disadvantage being in the afternoon with the wind compared to the morning round. We had some difficulty on hole 17 and had four bogies. That was a tricky hole. We lost some strokes, but I'm happy with where we are at."
Senior Jonny Rosa (68-70 - 138) is now 6-under after shooting 70. He is tied for 10th. Senior Jason Anthony (69-71 - 140), who is tied for 22nd, is 4-under. Freshman Matt Shaw (143) registered 70 and moved up to 48th place. Seniors Brian Kelley (71-75 - 146) and Ryan McDonald (72-78 - 150) are in 75th and 100th places, respectively.
Fresno State trails sixth-place Loyola Marymount (565) by one stroke and fifth-place East Tennessee State (564) by two shots. Host Arizona took the lead with a 24-under 552.
Utah's Dustin Pimm maintained the individual lead with 66-68 - 134 (-10).
The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams qualify for the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 31-June 3 in Sunriver, Ore.
Final-round play begins Saturday at 6:30 a.m. at Omni Tucson National Golf Course. Fresno State has tee times beginning at 7:17 a.m. Live scoring and results will be available at www.golfstat.com.
