FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (280-286-292) ended the NCAA Western Regional on Saturday in a tie for 12th place with an overall 6-under 858. Florida and host Arizona tied for first with 827 (-37) totals.
"It is always disappointing at the end of the year when you don't go on to the next level, but I am very proud of the guys," said head coach Mike Watney. "They battled all year long, and that's all you can really do."
Senior Jason Anthony ended up the top 'Dog, as he registered all three rounds under par for an overall 6-under 210. He shot rounds of 69-71-70 to tie for 22nd.
"The day went alright. It just didn't work out as well as we'd hoped," said Anthony. "This season went really well. This is a great group of guys and I wish we could have done a little better. I had a great time this year, though, regardless."
Senior Jonny Rosa, whose first-round 68 helped Fresno State to a third-place start, ended tied for 32nd with rounds of 68-70-74 - 212 (-4). Freshman Matt Shaw (73-70-74) tied for 68th with 217 (+1).
Senior Brian Kelley tied for 83rd with 71-75-74 - 220 (+4), and senior Ryan McDonald tied for 111th with 72-78-75 - 225 (+9).
Twenty-seven teams and a total of 141 golfers competed in the regional. The tournament was contested at Omni Tucson National Golf Course, a par- 72, 7,200-yard layout. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams move on to the NCAA Championship.
Fresno State has completed its season and will return to action in the fall.
