FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State finished the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship in second place Wednesday afternoon. Despite two sub-70 scores contributing to the team's 1-under 283 in the final round, the Bulldogs finished five strokes shy of winner New Mexico State.
Jason Anthony's final-round 69, which included four birdies and two bogeys, helped him tie for third place with Brian Kelley. Kelley made another eagle and three birdies, but bogeys brought his score to 72. Anthony and Kelley finished with 215 totals, four shots behind winner Matt Edwards of New Mexico State.
Ryan McDonald bettered his previous season low round of 68 with a 67 and achieved his best finish of the season by tying for seventh place.
Matt Shaw tied for 19th and Jonny Rosa tied for 25th.
"If you would have told me going into the tournament that we were going to shoot 1-under in the final round, I would have thought we were going to win," said head coach Mike Watney. "We put up some good scores today. But you have to give credit to New Mexico State for also playing well."
Also announced today, Shaw was named Freshman of the Year. Anthony received second-team all-WAC honors.
The NCAA West Regional will be held May 18-20 in Tucson, Ariz. Fresno State will await word on any possible postseason competition.
