Fresno, Calif. - Timeout, Fresno State's mascot, is getting his very own fire hydrant - several actually, thanks to the Fresno Fire Department.
Fire Chief Randy Bruegman presented Timeout and the Fresno State Red Zone with a special F.F.D. fire hydrant with ties to local history at a special ceremony on Aug. 30 in the Free Speech Area Stage next to the University Student Union.
The fire hydrant, a restored antique that was installed throughout the city from 1935-1965, has been painted red and decked out with Timeout's name. The "Fresno" style hydrant was designed by a Fresno Firefighter, and manufactured locally by the Kearney-Perkins Foundry
After the ceremony, Fresno Fire Department personnel painted several city-owned hydrants surrounding Bulldog Stadium fire engine red in time for the first Fresno State home football game Friday against Nevada at 5 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
The Red Zone is a student booster club created last year to generate student interest in Fresno State athletics events. Red Zone members will be leading the student section occupying the first 20 rows at Bulldog football games. The student section is located in the south end zone this year.
