FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team took seventh out of 14 teams after shooting a 295 third round to finish 18-over (287-288-295 - 870) Friday at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif. Saint Mary's and Arkansas were both able to keep their lead finishing the tournament tied for first with a total score of 856 to capture the Del Walker title.
Freshman Grant Doverspike (71-73-72 - 216) led the Bulldogs tying for 16th after finishing strong with a birdie on the 18th hole. He finished 3-over, only four strokes back from the leader.
Despite a tough third round, sophomores Matt Shaw and Matt Ryan opened the 2006-07 season with solid performances. After two rounds both Shaw and Ryan were tied for 12th at 1-over. Shaw finished the tournament tied for 22nd (72-71-74- 217), while Ryan placed 26th (72-71-75 - 218).
Todd Angel (72-78-74 - 224) shot 11-over to take 57th place and Brad Wyatt (76-73-77 - 226) tied for 61st.
"It was a rough day," said head coach Mike Watney. "It is kind of what I expected with four new guys in the lineup, some inconsistency. We have a few things to work on and that's what tournaments are for.
"Overall we did a lot of good things, but we will only get better," said coach Watney. "With a bunch of new guys that's what you do - get better and better."
The Bulldogs will compete next on October 2-3 in Reno, for the Nevada Wolfpack Classic.
