BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team fell in a non-conference match to Cal State Bakersfield on Roadrunner senior night Wednesday (Oct. 24) at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif. The game scores were: 17-30, 28-30 and 25-30.
Sophomore Lexi Watson, who returned to her hometown to play in front of many family and friends in Bakersfield, tied a career-high with seven kills. She also had seven kills against Oregon State earlier this season.
The Bulldogs took an early 3-1 lead in game one but the Roadrunners then went on a 0-8 run, behind the serving of Jodi Hardin, to take their first lead of the match at 4-10. Cal State Bakersfield went on a tear and finished out on a 20-13 run to take the 0-1 lead in the match.
Fresno State took its first lead of game two at 5-4 after rallying the first few points with the Roadrunners. Watson served for two-consecutive points to help give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the match at that point at 8-5.
The Bulldogs then went on to take a 13-9 lead but CSUB stormed back and scored eight-straight points to make it 13-17.
Behind the serving of Tiffany Hess, Fresno State got back to within one at 22-23 and forced CSUB to call a timeout. They then tied it at 23 off a bad rotation by the Roadrunners.
Points continued to rally as it was again tied at 24, 25, 26 and 27. At 27-29, Alisha McKee had a kill to make it 28-29 and force a timeout for CSUB. A Roadrunner kill finished the game and gave CSUB a 0-2 lead going into the locker room.
Game three started with a kill by Lacey Gera and Fresno State had an early 2-0 lead. The Roadrunners fought back to take the lead by as many as five. An Alisha McKee service ace cut the lead to 13-15, and the Bulldogs scored again off an error by CSUB.
Four-straight points by CSUB forced Fresno State to call a timeout at 14-19. The Roadrunners continued to extend their lead to as many as eight. The Bulldogs fought back to get it within four at 25-29 before CSUB took game three and the match.
McKee led the Bulldogs with 13 kills and Kasey Van Grouw had her fifth career double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs.
Cal State Bakersfield won the first meeting between the two teams on October 13 in Fresno, 1-3.
